About Dereel

Is this a single issue website?

As Dale rightly pointed out, it seems like this site is actually only about getting Dereel a mobile tower. While this issue is what moved me to create this website it is my hope that enough people in the community will get involved that it will cover a lot more. This of course would require people in the community to write posts and submit content and nothing would make me happier than to see this happen. So if you have an event, or an issue or just some information that you want to publish that you think is useful for the Dereel community (and yes I will even happily publish posts from people critical of Dereel getting a mobile tower, I'm not Stalin) then all you need to do is register for an account on this site then send me a message stating you'd like to write content and I'll enable your account to submit posts - I will have to moderate it before it's published (because I don't want to allow spam) but that's all there is to it. I look forward to seeing what we get.

A possible location...

After having a drive around Dereel I thought a good alternative location for a mobile tower could be near the corner of the Ballarat-Colac road and Rokewood Junction road.

If they're called microwaves can't they cook me?

Actually no. The term microwave is simply an easy way for us to refer to all radio wave frequencies between 300MHz and 300GHz. A microwave oven (which people assume is the same thing as any microwave radio frequency) can only cook things because of dielectric heating of water atoms. Radio waves from a mobile phone, TV or radio tower that transmit in the microwave range do not cause dielectric heating and anyone who tells you they do doesn't understand basic physics.

If you are scared of radio waves you should want a mobile tower

When a mobile phone only has only 1 or 2 bars of signal it has to boost its transmission power by 100 times to connect to the network than what it would transmit at when it has full signal. This is why you notice your phone goes flat faster in Dereel than people's phones in town do, or why your phone never gets the standby time the manufacturer claims (because they measure battery usage in areas of good reception). That's 100 times as much powerful radio waves right next to your head when you're using your phone or 100 times as much power in your pocket. To get the same dose of radio waves from a mobile phone tower you would have to be standing closer than 1 metre to it. You should fear your handset more than any mobile tower, 100 times more.

The truth of the matter is that TV and Radio are responsible for over 98% of all radio waves that pass through your body, mobile phone towers are typically only 20W (compared to 100's of watts for TV and Radio towers) and are responsible for less than 2% of radio waves. If you are campaigning against mobile towers you had better also be campaigning against TV and Radio towers (and I'd hope you don't have or use a TV or a Radio because that might make you a hypocrite).
